Drepung Monastery like the Sera Monastery and the Ganden Monastery, is one of the ‘great three’ Gelukpa monasteries of Tibet. Drepung was founded in 1416 by one of Tsongkhapas main disciples, Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden. Drepung monastery is the largest of all the Tibetan monasteries, located just outside of Lhasa.
Nowadays it is said that the Drepung Monastery is home to 300 monks or so. Unfortunately due to population control by the Chinese government the university is forced to continue its traditions and education in India. In Karnataka south India, there are over 5000 monks there. Each year, more refugees from Tibet arrive and are admitted to their Monastery in exile.
Here in this picture below we can see some monks in assembly inside the great hall of Drepung Monastery. The great hall is not only large, but it is quite beautiful and well kept.
